Jack Unterweger was an Austrian writer, journalist, heartthrob, and convicted murderer. During his first prison term, he published a novel, gained literary fame, and, after his release, was regarded by many as a model of successful rehabilitation. In 1994, he was convicted a second time for the murders of nine women. The play, featuring texts by Marcus Peter Tesch, explores the unsettling fascination that Unterweger exuded. How does public admiration arise for a person whose actions provoke horror? Where do the boundaries lie between compassion, desire, judgment, and mercy? And what roles did Unterweger himself play in shaping his public image? In Branko Janack’s production, Birgit Unterweger stands alone on stage and guides the audience through an evening that oscillates between closeness and distance, desire and revulsion, attraction and repulsion. The production by the Volkstheater Wien, in cooperation with the DRAMA FORUM at uniT Graz, can be seen in the Erfrischungsraum at the Schauspiel Köln.
