The festivities in honor of St. Ursula and St. Gereon will take place from October 10 to 21, 2026, at two of Cologne’s most significant Romanesque churches. Along with the Three Kings, Ursula and Gereon are considered the city’s patron saints.
Church services and sacred music come together with architecture, city history, legends, and Cologne traditions. In the basilicas of St. Gereon and St. Ursula, visitors can discover historical treasures, view relics, and learn about the special connection between Christian tradition and Cologne’s identity. Both churches are closely linked to the legends of the city’s patron saints: St. Gereon to the Roman soldier and martyr Gereon, and St. Ursula to the king’s daughter Ursula and her companions.
The festival week begins at St. Gereon with a festive Mass on the saint’s feast day. Choral and organ music will be a central focus throughout the event. Other program highlights explore different ways of experiencing the church interior: An organ matinee allows visitors to experience the acoustics of the monumental decagon, while the children’s tour “St. Gereon for Kids—In the Footsteps of the Romans” explores visible remnants of antiquity, the mysterious blood column, and other stories of the basilica. The program also features “Heartbeat,” an evening characterized by music, prayer, and silence.
The church tours in the Cologne dialect (op Kölsch) add a distinctly local flavor. Under titles such as “Gereon—Kölsch Like Us,” history and legends are conveyed through storytelling and Cologne-style humor. Another tour connects St. Gereon and St. Ursula; the program concludes with a visit to the “Chamber of Horrors.” At St. Ursula as well, a tour in the Kölsch dialect offers an entertaining and informative glimpse into the church interior.
The participation of traditional Cologne carnival clubs and folk groups also adds to the character of the festivities. The “Hellige Knäächte un Mägde,” Cologne’s oldest traditional dance group, and the KG Treuer Husar Blau-Gelb bring together church tradition and organized Cologne folk customs.
The highlight will be a solemn vespers service at St. Gereon on October 18 at 5:30 p.m. In the impressive decagon, works for choir and organ will be performed by the Cologne Tower Brass Ensemble and the vocal ensemble Ephemeron. The festive sermon will be delivered by Prof. Ursula Nothelle-Wildfeuer, a social ethicist from Freiburg.
Following the service, a solemn torchlight procession will wind its way through downtown Cologne from St. Gereon to the Basilica of St. Ursula. During the procession, the historic shrines and reliquaries of the city’s two patron saints will be carried from one church to the other. The celebration concludes at St. Ursula around 7:30 p.m. The evening winds down in a convivial atmosphere with Kölsch and pretzels on the forecourt.
On October 21, a festive Mass commemorating the feast day of St. Ursula will conclude the festivities. The program will include Mozart’s *Missa brevis in C*; soloists, a choir, and an instrumental ensemble will provide the musical accompaniment.
