Strauss’s comedy for music, balancing lightheartedness and melancholy

With *Der Rosenkavalier*, the Cologne Opera brings one of Richard Strauss’s most famous operas to the stage of the opera house. This “comedy for music,” based on the libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, is performed in German with German and English surtitles.

The plot takes you right into the world of the Field Marshal’s Wife, Princess Werdenberg, her young lover Octavian, the boorish Baron Ochs, and the young Sophie. Amid intrigues, mix-ups, and intense emotions, a story unfolds about love, time, and transience. The Field Marshal’s Wife, in particular, knows that nothing can be held onto—and that this is precisely where the quiet melancholy of this opera lies.

Strauss and Hofmannsthal combine Austrian burlesque, elegant comedy, and touching emotional depth into a dazzling evening of musical theater. Waltzes, refined timbres, and the connection to Mozart’s *Le nozze di Figaro* make *Der Rosenkavalier* a work in which cheerfulness and contemplation artfully intertwine.
