A Solo Piece on Artistic Self-Reflection

In “Made in China 2.0,” Wang Chong, one of China’s most internationally renowned theater artists, confronts himself on a virtually unprotected stage. The solo performance, which can be seen at the Freies Werkstatt Theater, combines personal memory, cultural reflection, and the question of how artistic practice finds its place between one’s origins and global mobility. The starting point is the situation of an artist who shuttles between continents, intertwining family history, pop-cultural influences, and social upheavals. The play, which premiered in Boston in 2023 and has been touring worldwide ever since, unfolds a dense tapestry of observations on generational dynamics and creative risk-taking. At the same time, it becomes clear how the play’s exploration of identity and authorship coalesces into a kind of manifesto: precise, discursive, and open to ambivalence. The performance is presented in English with German surtitles and invites audience members to understand the perspective of a global nomad who, with minimal resources, brings a multifaceted intellectual journey to the stage.
