With “Die Rheintöchter,” the NeoMusical Collective brings a queer-feminist, post-dramatic musical theater production to the stage of the Freies Werkstatt Theater in Cologne. The focus is on those characters who are usually relegated to the margins in Richard Wagner’s opera cycle “Der Ring des Nibelungen.” Here, they take center stage and are reimagined.
While the heroes embark on grand journeys, the Daughters of the Rhine remain by the Rhine, lingering and asking themselves: Are “the best years” truly over? What does it mean to carry on in times of societal tipping points? And what strength can be found in staying put, in being together, and in a safe space? The result is an evening of musical theater about resilience, cultural conflict, utopias, and the self-assured determination to remain “Messy Girls forever.”
