pond

Located in the Stadtwald Forest

Late afternoon in the city forest: The water lies still, only in the rings of a thrown pebble does the sky flicker. Joggers pass by, children watch a gray heron gliding over the mirrored surface of the water.

he Adenauer Pond is one of those places where the city's noise quiets down – everything moves at a slower pace. Anyone taking a walk here wanders through a natural resonance space: with sightlines across the water, old trees as a backdrop, and light that changes colors the longer you stay.

The Pond: Part of the city forest, part of the city

The pond is located in Stadtwald forest in the outer green belt and connects two needs that rarely coexist: spaciousness and proximity. Spaciousness, because looking over the water surface clears the mind; proximity, because you are in the middle of Cologne – just in a green chapter of the cathedral city.

Designed as an urban landscape and experienced as a nature area, the Adenauer Pond stands for the Cologne particularity of not over-dramatizing leisure: a place where you determine speed, daily form, and route yourself.

Natural area: Living space instead of a backdrop

The pond is considered a vibrant biotope. Young waterfowl rest in the reed belt, and numerous animal species can be seen among the trees. Each season offers its unique recreational value: In spring, the shore comes alive; in summer, the trees provide shade; in autumn, the foliage briefly blazes. Even in winter, a clear view offers a very distinct atmosphere. A small luxury that costs you no more than a trip to the Cologne city forest.

After a short or extended walk, you can stop by at the adjacent Club Astoria. Planning a visit to the RheinEnergieSTADION Combine it with an idyllic walk.

To the history

The Adenauer Pond is an artificial lake from the 1920s. It was created as part of the program for Kölner Grüngürtel (Cologne's green belt), initiated by Mayor Konrad Adenauer, on the grounds of former Prussian fortress installations. The city's garden administration, under Fritz Encke, designed paths, dams, and banks. Its name indeed commemorates Konrad Adenauer and honors his role in transforming Cologne into a "green" city.
