The kinetic sculpture Four Trapezoids as two Rectangels IV by George Warren Rickey is not an attention-grabbing work of art. The four stainless steel trapezoids drift silently in the wind, constantly forming new shapes. The bright surfaces play with the incident light. No matter what the wind force, whether the sun is shining or not, the sculpture rests in itself and yet is in constant motion, playing with itself and the elements, influencing the space and time of the square. The viewer is presented with a mesmerising spectacle, a counterpoint to the hectic hustle and bustle of the neighbouring shopping streets and a haven of peace for the small squares at their backs.
The sculpture was donated to the city of Cologne in 1987 by the Gesellschaft für Stadtentwicklung mbH "modernes Köln" and is now in the possession of the Museum Ludwig. The American artist is one of the most important representatives of kinetic art. Numerous other works of his adorn public spaces around the world.
