Alongside Rome and Paris, it is one of three cultural institutes of The Japan Foundation. It organises events in-house and promotes Japanese-German cultural exchange through funding programmes, as well as supporting Japan-related events throughout Germany. In addition, it promotes linguistic and social studies of Japan throughout the German-speaking world and cooperates with local cultural and scientific organisations.
Exhibitions of both contemporary and traditional art can be seen regularly in the rooms of the Japanese Cultural Institute. Japanese directors are presented as part of film series, and concerts, lecture series and stage performances with a connection to Japan are also organised.
A public library with a focus on Japan is available to visitors to the institute. There is also a wide range of Japanese language courses (various language levels).

From Cologne Central Station, take the underground 16 or 18 to Neumarkt (two stops).
From Neumarkt, take tram 1 in the direction of "Weiden" or "Junkersdorf" or tram 7 in the direction of "Frechen" (three stops) to "Universitätsstraße".
From the "Universitätsstraße" stop, turn left into Universitätsstraße and after approx. 150 metres you will find the Japanese Cultural Institute on the left-hand side.
