Church
The church of St Agnes, incidentally the second largest church in Cologne, was founded by the teacher, entrepreneur and politician Peter Joseph Roeckerath, who had made a huge fortune from his wife Agnes' inheritance. After the sudden death of his wife in 1890, Roeckerath pushed ahead with the construction of the church, which was finally built between 1896 and 1901 as a neo-Gothic hall church. Bricks were used as the building material, which were later faced with natural stone. The patron saint of the church is St Agnes of Rome, the patron saint of his wife. Severely damaged during the war, the church was rebuilt until the 1960s, although the vault was only reconstructed in the 1980s after a major fire. The rather simple interior of the church features choir windows by Wilhelm Buschulte, remnants of the neo-Gothic furnishings and a parish altar by Elmar Hillebrand. The crypt was redesigned by Anatol Herzfeld in 1994;
