Tanzbrunnen Köln

Venue

From past and present

The Tanzbrunnen has been a striking cultural anchor in the Rheinpark since the middle of the 20th century. Its creation dates back to the early 1950s, when Josef Op Gen Orth designed a spacious, accessible dance floor above a circular water basin. The two Federal Garden Shows in 1957 and 1971 provided decisive impetus: Hans Schilling added the characteristic stage complete with mushroom-shaped supports, later Frei Otto created the iconic star-shaped wave tent, whose light membrane architecture is still considered a defining element of the ensemble today. The interplay of historical structure, landscape integration and experimental constructions makes the site an example of continuous urban transformation.

Open terrain for multi-layered cultural production

Over the decades, the Tanzbrunnen has developed into a multifunctional stage that can accommodate up to 12,500 visitors. The open-air grounds, theater and the Rheinterrassen form an ensemble that enables concerts, festivals and social events in equal measure. Among others, Erykah Badu and AnnenMayKantereit have performed on the stage - two acts that combine different musical worlds and at the same time show how broad the spectrum of culture is here.

A place in transition

The ongoing modernization of the site and the preservation of the listed structures make it clear how much the Tanzbrunnen mediates between tradition and the future. The interplay of architectural heritage and contemporary use creates a space in which Cologne's cultural self-description is constantly rearticulated.
