Jewish Life in Cologne
Cologne’s Jewish history stretches back more than 1,700 years. Together with your group, you will embark on an exciting journey of discovery through the city’s history – from Roman times and the medieval Jewish quarter to the present day. Learn why Cologne holds special significance as the home of Germany’s oldest Jewish community.
The medieval Jewish quarter was once located in the historic City Hall district, in the heart of Cologne’s Old Town. At this authentic site, the history of Jewish life becomes especially tangible: archaeological finds tell stories of everyday life, culture, and religion. The mikveh, a ritual immersion bath built in the 12th century and one of the oldest surviving examples in Germany, is also an important testament to this period. It is currently not accessible.
This informative group tour combines historical sites with moving personal stories and fascinating insights into Cologne’s Jewish history. From the first documented mention of Jewish life in the year 321, through the expulsion of the community in 1424, to its new beginning in the 19th century, you will follow the traces of a history that continues to shape Cologne today.
