When the Kölner Philharmonie opens its doors on April 4, 2026, a space will be created in which orchestral sound art and Japanese animation culture will enter into a multi-layered dialog. Under the direction of Christian Schumann, the Philharmonie Südwestfalen & Band will perform key works from series such as "Naruto", "Demon Slayer", "Attack on Titan", "One Piece", "Dragon Ball", "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure", "Neon Genesis Evangelion" as well as compositions from the Studio Ghibli oeuvre. The selection of these soundtracks refers to a media history that has long had a cross-cultural impact and can be understood as a global aesthetic narrative. Anime music bundles emotional resonances from stories that span generations - from early television classics to current productions - and at the same time reflects social themes such as identity, courage and ambivalence. Presenter Hubertus von Lerchenfeld, the German voice of "Sanji" from "One Piece", complements the concert with contextual embeddings that shed light on genesis, artistic decisions and stylistic peculiarities. The result is an evening that not only allows iconic melodies to be heard, but also makes it possible to experience the cultural radiance of anime as an art form.
