Underground Cologne
Immerse yourself in the hidden world of Roman and medieval Cologne. This special group tour takes you to almost 2,000-year-old walls, mysterious passageways, and archaeological treasures that tell the story of the cathedral city’s eventful past.
Among other things, you will see the foundations of the Roman city wall, a medieval well from the time of Charlemagne, and an archbishop’s escape route in the underground car park beneath the cathedral. A special highlight is the early Christian baptistery from the 6th century, one of the oldest baptismal fonts in Germany. Here you will learn how baptisms were performed in early Christianity and why the basins were once built on such a large scale.
Exciting traces of antiquity also await beneath Great St. Martin: discover a Roman water basin, the remains of an old warehouse, and mighty foundations that still support the Romanesque church today. The tour combines archaeology, city history, and surprising stories.
