In the settling basin of the Eifel aqueduct, the flow rate of the water was slowed down so that dirt particles in the water settled to the bottom and purified water flowed further into the city. Other functions in the settling basin enabled the Romans to turn off the water towards the city when the pipes needed to be cleaned. The construction of the aqueduct can be dated to 30 AD to 50 AD on the basis of coins that were built into the basin.
