Celebrating the Lunar Year of the Horse

Exhibition

Galloping through time and space

The Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne takes you on an impressive journey through the centuries with the exhibition "Celebrating the Lunar Year of the Horse." Until January 31, 2027, paintings, woodblock prints, ceramics, porcelains, bronze sculptures, and lacquer objects invite you to explore the multifaceted significance of the horse in East Asia. For over two millennia, this noble animal has shaped the cultures of China, Korea, and Japan—as a celestial steed, status symbol, and epitome of strength and virtue.

To the Moon Year of the Fire Horse, beginning on February 17, 2026, the exhibition opens horizons across times and regions and shows how the horse has become an iconic element of East Asian art. This cultural-historical journey of discovery enables not only a deeper understanding of East Asian art but also of its influence on social structures and values. Engage in this intercultural encounter and experience the intertwining of art, myth, and tradition in an area that goes far beyond mere history.
