Layers and Cuts
Until January 31, 2027, the Museum of East Asian Art invites you to visit the special exhibition “Layers and Cuts.” On display are around 60 significant lacquer works dating from the 12th to the early 17th century, drawn from a private collection in Cologne and complemented by selected pieces from the museum’s own holdings.
The exhibition vividly conveys the fascination of this exceptional craft: built up in numerous wafer-thin layers and then artfully carved, the works reveal relief-like surfaces with remarkable depth of color and a subtle sheen. Highlights include rarely studied Yunnan lacquers from the Yuan dynasty as well as elaborately crafted pieces made for the imperial court of the Ming dynasty.
