Motherhood Beyond Clichés

With “#Motherfuckinghood,” Schauspiel Köln brings an intense solo performance about motherhood, care work, and societal expectations to the stage of the Kleines Haus. The starting point is a crisis that ensemble member Claude De Demo experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Without childcare, plagued by anxiety, and with too little time, feelings emerge that often have no place in the idealized image of motherhood: feeling overwhelmed, exhaustion, anger, and doubt.

Together with director Jorinde Dröse, Claude De Demo has developed a collage from these experiences that aims to present a more realistic picture of motherhood. Based on intensive research, conversations with scholars, and texts by authors such as Antonia Baum, Mareike Fallwickl, and Emilia Roig, the play addresses mental load, the gender pay gap, a shortage of daycare spots, feelings of guilt, and the so-called “maternal instinct.”

“#Motherfuckinghood” is a candid, personal, and at the same time socially highly relevant theatrical evening that gives voice to hidden experiences and asks what happens when the truth about motherhood is laid out on the table.
