Richard II: A King's Solo

Shakespeare's King at the Moment of His Downfall

From October 7 to November 29, 2026, the Theater Ehrenfeld will present “Richard II – A King’s Solo” based on William Shakespeare’s play. The production is based on an adaptation by Cornelia Rainer and Susanne Meister of the Thalia Theater, as well as on August Wilhelm Schlegel’s translation.

The starting point is a line from Shakespeare’s tragedy: “Thus I play many parts all by myself.” This gives rise to an unusual solo performance in which Jan Arwed Maul, as Richard II, brings the final hours of a king to the stage. The play is directed by Irina Miller.

Richard II has killed, dispossessed, fought, and schemed. But when he is overthrown and imprisoned, his story is not yet over. Now his true trial begins. Without a crown, without power, and with no way out, Richard must confront himself and discover his humanity.

Thus, the production focuses not only on the ruler but also on his vulnerability. An intense evening of theater about power, guilt, retribution, and the moment when a king becomes a human being. Performances take place at Theater&Ehrenfeld, located at Platenstraße 32.
