Lion Fountain

Erich-Klibansky-Platz - named after the last director of the Jewish school Jawne - is located between St.-Apern-Straße and Helenenstraße. Since 1997, the Löwenbrunnen children's memorial has commemorated the deportation and murder of over 1,100 Jewish children and young people during the Nazi era. A place of encounter with history and responsibility that both warns and informs.

The Lion of Judah: a symbol of remembrance

The central bronze figure, the "Lion of Judah", was sculpted by Hermann Gurfinkel, a former Jawne student. The lion, with its paw raised and gazing desperately towards the sky, carries the tablets of the Ten Commandments on another paw. Its haunting form symbolises both powerlessness and the duty to uphold universal values such as justice and humanity.

A collaborative work of remembrance

The fountain was created after years of research and initiative by Dieter and Irene Corbach, in collaboration with Gurfinkel. The surrounding bronze plaques, inscribed with the names of the murdered children, make the memorial a lasting reminder. Commemorative events are held here regularly, often with the participation of schoolchildren, to keep the past alive and emphasise the importance of ethical behaviour.
