Motionless traffic

Anyone who sees this sculpture without any prior knowledge will either walk past unsuspectingly or wonder what this object could be and represent. That it is a work of art can only be understood when it is known that underneath the concrete is an Opel Kapitän (model designation: P 2.6 - built in 1960). The automobile belonged to the Cologne-based artist Wolf Vostell, who set the car in concrete in 1969 with the engine and radio running, at that time in a parking space in front of the Art Intermedia art gallery. The work of art thus occupied a parking space with increasing traffic and thus directly interfered with the surroundings.

For the city administration, this prank was a little too much artistic intervention in the existing traffic conditions. The sculpture was relocated to the Hohenzollernring, where it can no longer take away a valuable parking space.
The stationary traffic will soon be relocated to a car park in front of the Kölnischer Kunstverein. This will put it back into its proper context and do justice to the artist's intention, the current changes in traffic politics makes it possible.
